Plain-English definitions of the terms that appear on every efoil spec sheet, followed by answers to the broad questions premium buyers ask most often.
- Angle of attack
- The angle between the front wing and the oncoming water flow. Increasing it, usually by pressing the back foot, produces more lift until the wing stalls; decreasing it lowers the board toward the surface.
- Aspect ratio
- The relationship between a wing's span and its chord. High-aspect wings are long and narrow, efficient and fast but less forgiving. Low-aspect wings are shorter and wider, lifting early and tolerating mistakes.
- Battery management system (BMS)
- The electronics inside a lithium-ion pack that monitor cell voltage, current, and temperature. A good BMS prevents deep discharge, limits power in extreme temperatures, and reports an honest charge level to the remote.
- Beginner mode
- A setting on many premium remotes that caps motor power or top speed so a new rider can learn throttle control without the risk of accelerating too hard.
- Board volume
- The internal volume of the hull, expressed in liters. It determines how much rider weight the board floats when stationary or moving slowly, which is why higher volume makes learning easier.
- Breach
- What happens when the front wing rises through the surface of the water. Lift disappears instantly and the board drops, usually throwing the rider forward. Longer masts and careful height control reduce breaches.
- Cavitation
- The formation of vapor bubbles on a propeller or wing surface at high speed or under heavy load, which reduces thrust or lift and can feel like a sudden loss of power or a shudder through the mast.
- Chord
- The distance from the leading edge to the trailing edge of a wing. Combined with span, it defines wing area and aspect ratio.
- Deck pad
- The textured foam covering on the top of the board that provides grip for the feet and knees and some cushioning during the learning phase.
- Electronic speed controller (ESC)
- The circuitry that translates the remote's throttle signal into power delivered to the motor. It sits between the battery and the motor and is a core part of a board's waterproofing and thermal design.
- Foil
- Shorthand for the complete underwater assembly of mast, fuselage, front wing, and stabilizer. It is the part of the system that generates lift and, on an efoil, also carries the motor.
- Front wing
- The larger, forward wing on the fuselage that generates most of the lift. Its area and aspect ratio define how early the board rises, how fast it can go, and how forgiving it feels.
- Fuselage
- The horizontal spar at the bottom of the mast that connects the front wing and the stabilizer. Its length influences pitch stability and turning agility.
- Hydrofoil
- A wing-shaped structure that generates lift when moved through water. On a board it raises the hull clear of the surface, reducing drag dramatically and creating the sensation of flight.
- Impact vest
- A padded, close-fitting vest that cushions falls onto the water and the board while providing some flotation. Widely recommended for efoil riders alongside a helmet.
- Jet drive
- A propulsion design that encloses the impeller in a housing so no blade is exposed. Generally safer in falls and shallow water, typically somewhat less efficient than an open propeller.
- Kill switch
- A safety mechanism, often a magnetic key on a wrist lanyard, that cuts motor power immediately if the rider separates from the remote. It works alongside the automatic cut-off that occurs when the throttle is released.
- Lift-off speed
- The speed at which the front wing generates enough lift to raise the hull clear of the water. Larger wings and lighter riders lift off at lower speeds.
- Lithium-ion battery
- The rechargeable chemistry used in essentially all premium efoils. Capacity is typically expressed in watt-hours. Packs are sealed against water and are the most expensive component of the board.
- Mast
- The vertical strut connecting the board to the fuselage and wings. Shorter masts suit beginners and shallow water; longer masts allow deeper carves and better handling in chop.
- Porpoising
- A rhythmic up-and-down oscillation of the board while foiling, usually caused by over-correcting weight shifts. A larger stabilizer, longer fuselage, or calmer input reduces it.
- Propeller guard
- A cage or ring surrounding an open propeller to reduce the chance of contact with a spinning blade. A key safety feature on boards that do not use an enclosed jet drive.
- Pumping
- A rhythmic weight-shifting technique that generates lift without motor power. Rarely necessary on an efoil but useful for gliding briefly after the throttle is released.
- Remote (hand controller)
- The waterproof wireless handset the rider holds to control throttle. Premium versions display battery level, speed, and mode, and cut power the moment the trigger is released or the unit hits the water.
- Shim
- A thin wedge placed between the stabilizer and the fuselage to change the stabilizer's angle. Shimming adjusts how much back-foot pressure the board wants at speed and is a tuning tool for experienced riders.
- Stabilizer (rear wing)
- The smaller wing at the rear of the fuselage that balances the front wing's lift and controls pitch. A larger stabilizer damps porpoising and adds stability.
- Touch-down
- The moment the hull contacts the water again after foiling, whether deliberately or from losing height. Higher-volume boards make touch-downs gentle; low-volume boards can stop abruptly.
- Ventilation
- Air being drawn down the mast or over the wing when the foil rides too close to the surface, which reduces lift suddenly. Distinct from cavitation, though the rider may feel both as a loss of stability.
- Watt-hour (Wh)
- The unit of energy used to express battery capacity. A higher figure generally means more ride time, though real range depends heavily on rider weight, wing choice, speed, and conditions.

What exactly is an electric hydrofoil board?
An efoil is a board with a mast and wing assembly beneath it and a small electric motor that provides propulsion. As speed builds, the wing generates lift and the hull rises out of the water, so the rider glides above the surface on the foil alone. A handheld wireless remote controls the throttle.
How long does it take to learn to ride an efoil?
Most people experience their first flights within the opening session or two when they have a forgiving setup and some instruction. Real ride time depends on rider weight, wing choice, speed, water conditions, and how much of the session is spent foiling rather than pushing a submerged hull. Treat any figure a maker states as a best-case ceiling, and expect noticeably less when riding fast on a small wing in chop.
Is an efoil dangerous?
It carries the risks of any powered water sport, chiefly falls, contact with the board or foil, and a spinning propeller. Well-designed premium boards address these with automatic cut-off remotes, magnetic kill switches, guarded or enclosed drives, and beginner modes. A helmet and impact vest are sensible from the first session.
Can you ride an efoil in the ocean?
Yes. Calm coastal water is one of the best environments for learning and cruising. Open water with chop and swell rewards a longer mast and a higher-volume board, and any saltwater use requires a fresh water rinse and regular seal and connector inspection to prevent corrosion.
Do you need a license or registration to ride an efoil in the United States?
Rules vary by state and sometimes by local authority. Some states treat a motorized board as a vessel that must be registered, some require a personal flotation device on board, and many lakes and swimming areas restrict motorized craft. Check the regulations for your specific water before you buy.
What is the difference between a jet drive and a propeller on an efoil?

How do you maintain an efoil?
Rinse the board, mast, motor, and foil with fresh water after every session, especially in salt. Inspect seals, o-rings, and connectors for grit and corrosion, treat dissimilar-metal bolts with an anti-corrosion compound, store the battery indoors at a partial charge, and keep the board out of direct sun.
Can you travel by air with an efoil?
The board and foil can be shipped or checked with suitable packaging, but lithium-ion batteries above a certain capacity are not permitted as airline luggage and must move by ground freight. Plan foil trips around road travel or arrange battery shipping well in advance.
Do efoils hold their value?
Boards from established makers with modular foil systems, available spare parts, and a service network tend to hold value better than closed designs.
