Renting an efoil or booking guided sessions is the sensible way to start, but at premium rental prices the bills add up quickly. At some point a rider who is on the water every week begins to wonder whether a board of their own would cost less. The answer depends on how often you ride, what you pay per session, and how much of the purchase price you can recover when you eventually sell.

This calculator works out your annual rental spend from your session rate and frequency, then builds an annual ownership cost from depreciation spread over the years you would keep the board plus running costs. It reports the break-even number of sessions per year and a plain verdict for your inputs. It ignores the convenience of always having a board ready and the hassle of storage and maintenance, so weigh those alongside the numbers.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter what you pay per rental or guided session and how many sessions a year you realistically ride.
  2. Add the purchase price of the board you are considering, a yearly running cost, how long you would keep it and the resale percentage you expect.
  3. Compare the annual rental and ownership figures, then check whether your sessions per year exceed the break-even number.

What the math assumes

  • Annual rental spend is simply the session price multiplied by sessions per year, with no membership discounts or package pricing.
  • Annual ownership cost equals the purchase price minus expected resale value, divided by the years you would keep the board, plus your annual running costs.
  • Break-even sessions per year is the annual ownership cost divided by the rental price per session; if the rental price is 0 the tool returns 0.
  • Financing interest, taxes, lessons, safety gear and the time value of money are not included unless you add them to the price or running costs.
  • The verdict compares the two annual figures only and does not weigh convenience, availability of rentals near you or the effort of storing and maintaining a board.

Frequently asked questions

How many sessions a year usually justify buying an efoil?

It depends entirely on your local rental price and the board you would buy. The break-even output shows the exact number for your inputs; if you ride more often than that, ownership costs less per year on paper.

Does renting have advantages the numbers miss?

Yes. Renting gives you access to current models, no storage or maintenance, and often an instructor. Ownership means the board is always available and you can ride any spot you choose, which matters for people far from a rental operator.

What if I buy a used board instead of new?

Enter the used price as the purchase price and a lower resale percentage if the board is already a few years old. A cheaper entry point usually pulls the break-even number down considerably.

Should I include the cost of learning?

If you would take lessons before buying anyway, that cost applies to both paths. If ownership means teaching yourself, add any coaching you expect to book to the first year of running costs.
