Manufacturer range claims for electric hydrofoil boards are usually quoted for a light rider cruising gently in flat water. A heavier rider carving hard into chop at higher speed can see a very different number, and running the pack down to empty far from shore is the one mistake every efoil owner wants to avoid. Knowing your realistic session length before you launch is a safety question as much as a planning one.

This estimator starts from the battery capacity in watt hours and a baseline cruising power draw, then adjusts that draw for your body weight and how you ride. It subtracts the reserve you want to keep and converts the remaining energy into minutes on foil and miles covered at your average speed. Power draw varies by board, wing and water, so use the number from your own app or manufacturer data where you have it, and treat the result as a planning estimate rather than a guarantee.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your battery capacity in watt hours and your weight in full riding gear.
  2. Set the baseline cruising draw from your app or spec sheet, choose the riding style that matches most of your session and enter your usual speed on foil.
  3. Pick the reserve you want to keep for the trip home, then read the estimated minutes, miles and average draw before you plan a route.

What the math assumes

  • The baseline power draw you enter is treated as the cruising draw for a 175 lb rider; the default of 1500 W is a placeholder to replace with your own board data.
  • Power draw is assumed to rise or fall by 3 percent for every 10 lb above or below 175 lb of rider weight, and is never reduced below half the baseline.
  • Riding style multiplies the draw by 0.85 for relaxed cruising, 1.0 for mixed riding and 1.3 for sporty riding; these are simplifying factors, not measurements of any specific board.
  • Usable energy equals battery capacity minus the reserve percentage you keep, and the whole session is assumed to be spent on foil at your average speed.
  • Time spent falling, restarting, taxiing on the surface, wind, current and cold weather are not modelled and will reduce real world results.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find the cruising power draw for my board?

Most premium efoils show live wattage in the rider app or remote during a session. Note the figure while cruising steadily in flat water and use that as your baseline; if you have no data, keep the default and treat the output as a rough guide.

Why is my real range shorter than the estimate?

Falls, restarts and surface taxiing burn energy without covering distance, and chop, wind and cold water all raise the draw. The estimate assumes the whole session is spent flying, so expect real numbers to come in lower.

How much reserve should I keep?

Enough to return from the farthest point of your ride with margin for wind and current. Many riders plan a turnaround well before the pack reaches their reserve level rather than riding until the warning appears.

Does a bigger wing improve range?

A larger, more efficient wing generally lets the board fly at lower power, which lowers the draw and extends time on foil. The estimator reflects that only if you enter a lower baseline draw measured with that wing.
